Wide Array of Courses
The size and stature of Notre Dame’s Department of Theology, alongside its global reach, its wide-angle perspective on Catholicism, and the significant number of visiting professors attracted to our University, combine to make a wide offering of courses available to students in all the areas of theology.
Examine the suggested sequence of the M.Div. curriculum.
Each year has a particular thematic focus, but all have a dual interest in establishing the fundamentals and experiencing the breadth and depth of Church wisdom and practice. In order to ensure a balanced approach to the full process of preparation, the M.Div. program has distribution requirements for courses.
The John S. Marten Program
Our John S. Marten Program in Homiletics and Liturgics annually offers courses for students whose ministries will involve the preaching of God’s word and leadership in worship. Students can attend symposia and workshops on preaching in contemporary society.

“The amazing range of coursework, from liturgical studies to liberation theology and the history of Christianity, are very much responsible for helping me to understand not only what our Church says, but also where it has been, the questions that are still being asked of it throughout the world and also how all of the different viewpoints and theologians throughout history affect the way in which the Church has served her people.”

“The diversity in course work keeps the master’s work fresh and fascinating. Although the work and approach are different, the overlap of the material approached historically, biblically or theologically, makes for an extremely well integrated and formative program that is both intellectually and spiritually trransformative.”
